Espresso Yourself: Australia’s reigning Latte Art Champion Kirby Berlin creates a cartoon Indian
For this edition of Espresso Yourself, we’re going to look again at some etching and do a cartoon Indian.
As this works off a rosetta, ensure that you have that pattern nailed first. A tip with the rosetta is not to stress too much about the design as you do it. Keep your spout close to the cup as you pour.
Essentially you’re just doing ‘Ss’ with your spout, so have faith as you pour that it will turn out. When you pull through, you do need to lift your spout up a bit to draw a thin line.
With this kind of etching latte art, it may seem complicated, but the trick to get it right is actually to keep it simple. Don’t be afraid to stick to really simple strokes, it’ll make all the difference with your final product.
If you overcrowd the picture with too many details, the picture can get lost.
Another advantage to keeping the etching simple is that it’ll be quicker. Especially if you’re doing this at a café, you want to ensure your coffee isn’t going to go cold.
Also, always remember to wipe off your etching tool between strokes to keep your cup nice and clean.
-
Step 1
Pour a rosetta to the right side and pull through to the left of that rosetta.
-
Step 2
On the left of the rosetta, pour a white spot to create the face
-
Step 3
Drag your etching tool through the crema. Drag it along the profile of the face and into the face for the nose.
-
Step 4
After wiping off your etching tool, dip it into the crema once again and drag it through through the face for the mouth.
-
Step 5
Dip your etching tool once again into the crema and draw on your eyes.

Step 6
There you have it, a cartoon Indian
