The Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) has announced the seven finalists of the 2019 AMC Australian Roasting Championship, to be held at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) from 7 to 9 February.
Following an initial round that saw competitors roast a compulsory coffee in their own roastery before sending it back for assessment, Matthew Troughton of Grace & Taylor Coffee Company, Willy Goh of Wolff Coffee Roasters, Takumi Nakamoto of Deluca Coffee, Daniel Shadbolt of Veneziano Coffee Roasters, Nick Raven of Ravens Coffee, and Pat Connolly and Ben Toovey of Genovese Coffee were selected to compete in the final round.
The Australian Roasting Championship sees competitors given green coffee samples to grade and assess for roasting. After roasting onsite at MICE, the samples are judged on cup quality and sensory assessment.
This is the third Australian Roasting Championship the ASCA Roasters Guild has held since the competition launched in 2016. Jack Allisey of Veneziano Coffee Roasters won in the competition’s inaugural year, and Ben Toovey of Genovese Coffee took the 2018 title.
The winner of the 2019 AMC Australian Roasting Championship will compete in the World Coffee Roasting Championship, taking place in Rimini, Italy in January.
