The Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) has announced the Australian Roasting Championship finals, will be held in Port Melbourne from 29 May to 1 June.
Criteria Coffee is set to host the event, ASCA’s seven top ranked roasters will go head-to-head.
The multi-day championship will see competitors roast a single origin coffee and blend, which plan an experience panel of cuppers then judges on cup quality and sensory assessment.
Following an initial round that saw competitors roast a compulsory coffee in their own roastery before sending it back for assessment, Matthew Troughton of Grace and Taylor Coffee Company, Willy Goh of Wolf Coffee Roasters, Takumi Nakamoto of Deluca Coffee, Daniel Shadbolt of Veneziano Coffee Roasters, Nick Raven of Ravens Coffee, and Pat Connolly and Ben Toovey of Genovese Coffee were selected to compete in the finale round.
The winner of the ASCA 2019 Australian Roasting Championship will compete at the World Coffee Roasting Championship (WCRC), taking place in Taipei from 15 to 18 November at the 2019 Taiwan International Coffee Show.
This marks the third Australian Roasting Championship the ASCA Roasters Guild has held since the competition launched in 2016. Jack Allisey of Veneziano Coffee Roasters won in the competition’s first year, and Ben Toovey of Genovese Coffee took the 2018 title.
The 2018 WCRC saw Ben place fourth and Jack second.
