Jason ToToTam, Australian barista turned game-maker, is launching Coffee Up! a cooperative memory card game centred on running a five-star coffee shop.
“I’ve been a barista for over 13 years and this game was inspired by my time making coffee,” says Jason.
“There were some customers I remembered their names and some I remembered their coffee orders. It took multiple visits to remember both. I took my experience as inspiration to make a modern-day memory game.”
In the game, the head barista (first player) will call out customers’ names and coffee orders for all baristas (players) to memorise.
The customer cards will be equally dealt to all baristas, with the back of the card displaying the customer’s face and held up for all other players to see.
On their turn, players will point to a customer in another player’s hand and call out either their coffee order or name. If they are incorrect, the player loses a star – if all stars are lost, the coffee shop shuts down. A star is earned if the player calls out both the customer’s name and order.
The goal is to stay in business for seven days, with each day getting progressively more difficult.
Coffee Up! is available to play on Ludio – an interactive video platform for remote game playing, and will officially launch on 16 November 2024. For details on online game events throughout November, visit the Kickstarter website.
