In response to changing Australian coffee drinking habits, Industry Beans has extended the opening hours of its CBD cafés in Melbourne and Sydney until 6pm on weekdays. “Right now, what we’re seeing and hearing is that coffee drinking doesn’t stop at 2, 3, or 4pm in Australian cities – it’s become an evening experience,” says Trevor Simmons, CEO at Industry Beans.

La Marzocco has opened the doors of Accademia del Caffè Espresso, its centre for cultural, educational development and research that aims to build a sustainable future of espresso coffee. The Accademia del Caffe Espresso, housed in La Marzocco’s industrial building in Florence, Italy, was home to the company’s factory from 1959 to 2009. The so-called “Officina” or workshop, was managed by the company’s founding fathers, Giuseppe and Bruno Bambi, and then by Piero, alongside a small group of craftsmen.

Cup of Excellence celebrates 20th anniversary

The Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) and its flagship program Cup of Excellence (COE) were honoured in a celebration recognising the 20th anniversary of the competition and auction program. The ACE says in this time, COE has discovered incredible coffees, micro regions no one knew existed, and brought international fame to individual farmers. While Brazil is the longest running program to date, COE has been established in multiple coffee producing countries. Bidders have paid up to US$300 per pound for winning coffees, resulting in a combined US$60 million going to farmers from COE auctions.

Jordan Montgomery, Marketing Manager at Ona Coffee, says many cafés are choosing to rotate guest roasters to serve to their customers, whether as a secondary option to their house blend or changing their coffee offerings with each new roaster.

Kyoungha “Charlie” Chu of St Ali has won the Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) 2020 Southern Region Cup Tasters Championship with a score of 8/8 in three minutes and six seconds. Yuki Saito of Addict Food and Coffee placed second with a score of 8/8 in four minutes and four seconds. Sheng-Wei Wu of Cote Terra Coffee Roasters placed third with a score of 8/8 in five minutes and 18 seconds.
