Jeffrey D Sachs proposes global coffee fund to finance sector sustainability

Professor Jeffrey D Sachs of Columbia University has proposed the creation of a global coffee fund to co-finance the sustainability of coffee growers at the Second World Coffee Producers Forum (WCPF) in Brazil on 10 July. This fund, which would be US$10 billion (about $14.3 billion) per year, would be initially fed with US$2.5 billion (about $3.6 billion) in resources from the industry. This would be added to public and private contributions for direct investments in farm for another US$2.5 billion, as well as budget disbursements for the and contributions from donors for the same amount.

London calls for non-recyclable coffee cup ban

The London Assembly has called on the Mayor to lobby the British government to introduce a tax on single-use plastics and ban single-use, non-recyclable hot drinks cups. The London Assembly is a 25-member elected body that scrutinises the activities of the Mayor of London. The Assembly Member who proposed the motion, Léonie Cooper, says “with plastic polluting our rivers and oceans, causing terrible consequences for wildlife and our environment, we need urgent action”.

International coffee prices see sustained growth over June

The monthly average of the International Coffee Organization (ICO) composite indicator rose 7.1 per cent to 99.97 US cents per pound in June 2019. This marks the first increase in the monthly average since January 2019. The daily composite indicator ranged between 95.17 US cents per pound on 18 June and 105.25 US cents per pound on 28 June. The daily price rose above US$1 for the first time since 18 February 2019 on 30 May and remained above that level for nine days.
