Australia’s Matthew Lewin of Ona Coffee placed 11th in the 2019 World Barista Championship (WBC), held at the Specialty Coffee Expo in Boston, United States from 11 to 14 April.
Matt advanced to the WBC semi-finals where he received a score of 399. He was the top ranked barista going in from the preliminary round with a 522 score.
Matt’s performance focused on how to connect consumers to specialty coffee. He used each course to take the judges from the consumer level to the ‘specialty bubble’ coffee professionals live in.

Jooyeon Jeon of South Korea wins 2019 World Barista Championship
Jooyeon Jeon of Momos Coffee in South Korea has become the second female barista to win the World Barista Championship (WBC).
Taking over the title from 2018 WBC winner Agnieszka Rojewsk of Poland, Jooyeon was overcome with shock and emotion upon the final announcement at the Specialty Coffee Association Expo in Boston, United States on 14 April.

Jia Ning Du of China wins 2019 World Brewers Cup
Jia Ning Du has become the first Chinese barista to win the World Brewers Cup (WBrC).
It was third time lucky for Jia on the WBrC stage, winning the prestigious title on her third attempt, having represented China in 2016 and 2018.
“I’m so overwhelmed right now but at the same time my mind is blank. I’m feeling so many different emotions,” Jia of Uni Uni Coffee tells BeanScene Magazine.
“I honestly thought I’d never have the opportunity to represent my country on the world stage. It means a lot to China’s coffee industry. It’s the first time a Chinese barista has competed in this category, got into the final, and won.”

ICO reports 13-year low coffee prices
In March 2019, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) composite indicator fell by 3.1 per cent to 97.50 US cents per pound, the lowest monthly average of coffee prices since October 2006, when the price was 95.53 US cents per pound.
The ICO reports that price movements for all group indicators have fallen, contributing to the low composite indicator.
