The 2018 Square Australia Coffee Report has revealed that, despite total sales decreasing from 43 to 33 per cent since 2016, the latte remains the country’s most popular coffee drink. Now in its third year, the annual report from point-of-sale platform Square and the Specialty Coffee Association collects consumer data to identify trends in the Australian coffee industry.

Equipment supplier Xtracted Espresso Solutions has announced the formation of a direct importing partnership with Seattle based espresso machine manufacturer Synesso. This is the first time in 12 years that Synesso have opened its distribution channels in Australia. As the only independent importer and distributor of Synesso in Australia, Xtracted Espresso Solutions says it looks forward to having the machines available to a broader range of coffee roasters.

Grinders Coffee partners with Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race

On 10 December, Grinders Coffee Roasters announced the formation of a partnership with the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA). The partnership included naming-rights to the Grinders Coffee Solas Big Boat Challenge, which took place on 11 December in Sydney Harbour, and will see Grinders Coffee play a part in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race from 27 December. Participants will be able to sample the Melbourne-roasted coffee at Constitution Dock, Tasmania.

NZSCA opens entries to 2019 New Zealand Barista Championship

The New Zealand Specialty Coffee Association (NZSCA) is searching for the best baristas in the country to compete in the 2019 New Zealand Barista Championship at the Expressions Arts and Entertainment Centre in Upper Hutt from 2 to 3 February. Only 20 baristas will be chosen to compete in the New Zealand Barista Championship. In the event that there are more than 20 entrants, the NZSCA will conduct a selection process, awarding entry to those competitors it considers best able to excel in competition conditions. This means the information entrants provide at the time of entry is important to help the NZSCA make a sound selection.
