Ona Coffee performs hat trick at 2019 Central Region Barista Championship

Angus Mackie of Ona Coffee has won the Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) 2019 Central Region Barista Championship for the second year in a row. Representatives from Ona Coffee rounded out the top three positions, with two-time Australian Barista Champion Hugh Kelly placing second, and Joao Carlos Henriques placing third. The competition was held at Specialty Coffee Curators in Marrickville, New South Wales from 27 to 28 October.

Celebrity couple Victoria and David Beckham have visited Marrickville café Coffee Alchemy, where Co-owner Clare Lim says the international soccer star ordered three lattes over the course of his half hour stay. “He took such an interest in our coffee and we were only too happy to run through all our blends and Single Estates,” Clare says.

Four-time Irish Barista Champion and 3fe Managing Director Colin Harmon helped launch Victoria Arduino’s Mythos 2 grinder to Australian audiences on 23 October. The Mythos 2 Gravimetric launch, host by Espresso Mechanics at Veneziano Richmond in Melbourne, saw Colin and Victoria Arduino representative Michele Mastrocola from Italy present the evolution of the new model and its significant differences from the Mythos One, first launched in 2013.

ASCA Central Region Coffee Championships on this weekend

The 2019 Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) Central Region Coffee Championship will take place from 20 to 21 October. Held at Specialty Coffee Curators in Marrickville, New South Wales, this is the third regional of the 2019 competition season. The Central Region Coffee Championship will see the best baristas from NSW and the Australian Capital Territory combine to compete in the Barista, Latte Art, Brewers Cup and Cup Tasters competitions.
