ASCA announces 2017 competition schedule

The Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) has announced the schedule for the 2017 competition year.

La Marzocco Local to host NSW event tonight

La Marzocco Local will host a New South Wales Linea PB Auto Brew Ratio (ABR) showcase event and industry party on 9 June.

Nuova Simonelli to host Simonelli & Friends in Dublin

Nuova Simonelli will host its annual Simonelli &Friends event in Dublin on 24 June.

Upping the ante

Coffee is evolving. The way it is grown and processed is evolving. The way we roast, extract and drink it is evolving. Most importantly, the general public’s interest and appreciation of specialty coffee is evolving.

As you can then imagine, it was with a dose of shock and horror that I read a comment on a social media platform recently where a respected industry old timer proclaimed that he could not think of a single improvement in the world of coffee since the 1990s. He went on to say that the more the coffee industry descended into mumbo jumbo and alchemy, the less the public would listen. Read more

Square One Coffee Roasters’ Elika Rowell wins hospitality scholarship

Elika Rowell, Head Roaster at Square One Coffee Roasters, has been named the 2016 Hostplus Hospitality Scholarship Winner.

On 6 June more than 100 chefs, producers, culinary educators, wine producers and restaurateurs gathered for the Legends and Rising Stars awards event to recognise the leaders of Australia’s world-class food and wine industry. Read more

ASCA seeks two new board members

The Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) has announced there are two new board positions available, and ready to be filled.

ASCA is recruiting a Membership Advocate and Head of Roasters Guild on an interim basis. These temporary positions will be voted on at the next ASCA Annual General Meeting (AGM). Read more

MICE reveals new dates for 2017

Event Organisers of the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) have announced new dates for the 2017 event: 30 March to 1 April.

MICE is Asia Pacific’s largest specialty coffee event. At the past event, an impressive 9,213 people came to touch, taste, try and buy at MICE2016, which housed 120 exhibitors in the Grand Pavilion at the Melbourne Showgrounds. Read more

Brewhaha: Café incorrectly linked to deconstructed coffee

It was the post that got social media talking this week – an image of a “deconstructed coffee”.

Mamamia’s recently departed editor-in-chief Jamila Rizvi posted the image on Facebook on 31 May with the caption “sorry Melbourne but no. No no no no. Hipsterism has gone too far when your coffee comes deconstructed”. Read more

NZSCA elects new Board at AGM

The New Zealand Specialty Coffee Association (NZSCA) hosted its Annual General Meeting on 27 May in Wellington.

The AGM discussed the association’s activities and achievements over the past year, and well as new initiatives for the coming year.

It was a chance for all NZSCA members to participate in the election of a new board, and have the opportunity to network with fellow colleagues and industry members. Read more
