Country of origin food labelling surveillance to commence 1 July

From 1 July, Australian consumers will have much greater certainty about the origins of the food they buy due to the introduction of mandatory Country of Origin food labelling. 

The Australian Competitor and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will conduct market surveillance checks on 10,000 food products to ensure businesses are correctly displaying the new labels. Read more

Australia to host seven regional AeroPress competitions

Event organisers have announced seven regional AeroPress competitions will take place across the country and conclude with the national championship in Melbourne on 19 September.  

The first regional event will start on 27 July in Canberra at Red Brick Espresso and end in Perth at Laika Coffee Roasters & Micrology Coffee Roasters on 9 September. 

“It was a tough decision this year, as we received a resounding amount of interest to host events in Australia, but we have our final list. We’re overjoyed to have a former Australian AeroPress Champion host in Adelaide, and for the first time in Perth, we have two hosts collaborating,” says event organisers.

Anyone interested in sampling the same coffee Agnieszka Rojewska of Poland used to win this year’s World Barista Championship (WBC) should stop by Ona Coffee Marrickville on Saturday 30 June.

World Animal Protection investigates civet cat cruelty in Bali

A new report from World Animal Protection has found demand for the world’s most expensive coffee is continuing to keep civet cats captive in cruel conditions. 

Civet coffee, or Kopi Luwak as it is also known in Indonesia, is produced across the island of Bali, by civets, who are poached from the wild and kept in cramped cages to produce gourmet coffee for visiting tourists.

A research team from World Animal Protection recently visited 13 of the suspected 30 to 40 Kopi Luwak venues to assess the welfare of the 80 captive civets.  Read more

Agnieszka Rojewska becomes first female to win the World Barista Championship

Agnieszka Rojewska of Poland has won the 2018 World Barista Championship (WBC). Agnieszka, a veteran of multiple coffee competitions across the globe, triumphed over 55 other baristas to become the first woman ever to win the title.

Lex Wenneker of The Netherlands was runner up, Mathieu Theis of Switzerland was third place, Michalis Katsiavos of Greece was fourth, Cole Torode of Canada was fifth place, John Gordon of New Zealand was sixth place, and Craig Simon of Australia finished in seventh place. Read more

California moves to clear coffee of cancer stigma

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), has proposed a regulation to clear coffee of its toxic stigma.

The decision follows a review of more than 1000 studies published by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) that found “inadequate evidence” that drinking coffee causes cancer. Read more

Craig Simon of Veneziano Coffee makes Semi Finals of WBC

Craig Simon of Veneziano Coffee Roasters will compete in the Semi Finals of the 2018 World Barista Championship (WBC) on 22 June.

Craig competed in the first round of heats on 21 June at World of Coffee in Amsterdam, taking to station three with a 15-minute routine that had the judges drinking their milk beverages with straws and swirling Craig’s signature beverage like they were at a wine bar.  Read more
