Jade Jennings of Veneziano wins ASCA Southern Region Barista Championship back-to-back

Veneziano Coffee Roasters’ Jade Jennings has taken home the gold tamper trophy in the Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) 2017 Southern Region Coffee Championship Barista competition for the second year in a row.

In what was a repeat of last year’s top three Southern Region barista finalists, Axil Coffee Roasters took out second and third place with Matt Lewin runner up, and Anthony Douglas in third place at at Maillard Atelier on 17 September. Read more

July coffee exports hit five year low: ICO

The volume of coffee exported globally plunged dramatically in July, with shipments totalling just 7.7 million bags, 22 per cent less than the same month last year, and the lowest monthly volume since October 2011, according to the International Coffee Organization (ICO). Read more

Study suggests coffee lovers are born, not made

New research has found that a certain genetic variation can influence how much coffee a person drinks.

The study, which was published on the Nature journal’s Scientific Reports website, identified the gene PDSS2 as having a bearing on peoples’ enjoyment of coffee. Read more

ASCA Guilds to host Coffee Trivia Night

The Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) Barista and Roasters Guild are joining forces to host a Coffee Trivia Night on 12 September.

Vittoria’s Les Schirato awarded United Nations Lifework Award

The United Nations Association has presented Vittoria Food & Beverage CEO, Mr Leslie Schirato, with the UNAA Lifework – Individual 2016 award for his contributions to the Australian coffee, food and beverage industry.

Les was also cited for his services to the community and philanthropic contributions to health, youth, rural areas, social welfare and those less fortunate, as well as investing time and mentoring of youth in business and talent development.
