Foodco crowns Muffin Break and Jamaica Blue barista champions

Following an intense two-day event, Foodco Group has crowned Muffin Break Penrith and Jamaica Blue Warringah Mall the winners of its tenth annual barista competition.

Held at Foodco’s Centre of Retail Excellence in Sydney from 22 – 23 June, two finalists from each state of Australia were selected to compete in the annual event, out of 340 baristas across Muffin Break bakery cafés, and 166 from Jamaica Blue cafés. Read more

Join CaféSmart 2016 to impact local communities

CaféSmart is calling on Australia’s coffee community to unite on 5 August and help combat homelessness.

On this day, CaféSmart participating cafés will donate $1 of every coffee sold to fund a range of projects designed to tackle homelessness. Already 110 cafés and 26 coffee roasters have registered for the CaféSmart 2016, but StreetSmart CEO Adam Robinson is keen to grow this number significantly before the big day. Read more

Alex Yurong Pan represents Australia in Tea Masters Cup International

Alex Yurong Pan is representing Australia in the Tea Masters Cup International in South Korea.

The 2016 competition, taking place from 9 to 10 June at the Tea World Festival in Seoul, celebrates tea preparation, tea pairing and tea tasting.

Alex won the Australia and New Zealand Tea Masters Cup on 15 May at Melbourne’s Meat Market building. Read more

Riverina Fresh farmers talk life on the land

Neil Jolliffe’s alarm clock goes off well before most baristas arrive at their café to fire up the coffee machine for the morning rush.

At 4.20am Neil is his own barista. He makes himself a coffee or “instant mud” as his wife Simone describes it, before hopping on his motorbike to round up 260 dairy cows for the morning milking. Staff arrive at 5am to assist and, on a good day, Neil’s back at home eating breakfast and enjoying his second coffee at 8am. Read more

ASCA to host The Coffee Man screening in Melbourne 14 June

The Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) Southern Region Barista Guild will host a screening of The Coffee Man on 14 June, starring Ona Coffee’s Sasa Sestic.

From 5pm the coffee community is invited to attend The Craft and Co on Smith Street in Collingwood, Victoria and participate in a cupping of Ona Coffees sampled from regions featured in the film, including Honduras, Colombia and Ethiopia. The screening of The Coffee Man will follow the cupping. Read more

Gekko to attempt Guinness World Record

Ballarat mining company, Gekko Systems, will attempt the Guinness World Record for the world’s biggest cup of tea.

Grinders Coffee Lygon Street shortlisted for Melbourne Design Awards

Grinders Coffee’s newly re-designed Lygon Street flagship store has been shortlisted for Best Interior Design (Hospitality) in the 2016 Melbourne Design Awards.

For more than 50 years Grinders Coffee House has been an iconic part of Lygon Street’s heritage, first established in 1962. To bring the historic site into the modern era, the tired building has undergone an intensive renovation program to bring it back to its original glory. Read more

SCAE members vote for unification with SCAA

Members of the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE) have endorsed moves to unify their organisation with the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) in a vote held as part of the long running process examining the prospect of unification of the two organisations.

Members of the SCAA will now have the opportunity to express their views on the process in a vote that will be held over the Northern summer. Read more
