A new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition suggests the daily consumption of coffee and tea may be linked to increased health benefits including longevity.
The research group, based in Guangzhou, China, found that replacing some daily water intake with coffee and tea may lead to health benefits and a longer life span.
From their findings, they identified if participants drank between seven to eight drinks a day – with a balance of coffee, tea, and water – they had a 28 per cent lower risk of death from any cause than those who drank fewer than four drinks a day.
The researchers also noted drinking coffee was associated with a reduced incidence of several cancers and a reduction in death from all causes.
The study used data from 182,770 adults registered in the United Kingdom Biobank and followed participants’ 24-hour dietary journals to decipher daily beverage intake. Over the course of 13 years, the research team routinely followed up with the participants and recorded incidences of disease and cause of death for any participants who had died.
“These results highlight the importance of the rational combination of coffee, tea, and plain water, with particular emphasis on ensuring adequate total intake, offering more comprehensive and explicit guidance for individuals,” said the authors.
