The annual Specialty Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE) Excellence Awards have been presented to leaders in the coffee community excelling in their fields.
Announced on 24 June at World of Coffee in Dublin, Ireland, the SCAE International Development Committee judged the award winners, honouring members of the community who have contributed to the success of the coffee industry through education, innovation, sustainability and entrepreneurship. The 2016 Cup of Excellence (COE) Honduras auction has broken the record for the highest price ever recorded.
On June 16, winning COE farmer Marysabel Garcia Caballero from El Puente farm in Chinacla, La Paz, received the record-setting bid of US$120.50 (approximately AUD$160) per pound for her Geisha coffee. Read more
CaféSmart is calling on Australia’s coffee community to unite on 5 August and help combat homelessness.
On this day, CaféSmart participating cafés will donate $1 of every coffee sold to fund a range of projects designed to tackle homelessness. Already 110 cafés and 26 coffee roasters have registered for the CaféSmart 2016, but StreetSmart CEO Adam Robinson is keen to grow this number significantly before the big day. Read more
The Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) Southern Region Barista Guild is planning a trip to origin – in Australia.
For the first time, the Guild is coordinating an origin trip from 2 – 4 September, and is seeking interested members.
“This is a great opportunity for baristas and the wider coffee community to explore origin in our own backyard, minus the overseas price tag,” Head of ASCA South Regional Barista Guild David Boudrie says. “The trip is a chance for people to get up close with coffee production, network with industry members, and get first-hand education about our country’s own coffee production.” Read more
Neil Jolliffe’s alarm clock goes off well before most baristas arrive at their café to fire up the coffee machine for the morning rush.
At 4.20am Neil is his own barista. He makes himself a coffee or “instant mud” as his wife Simone describes it, before hopping on his motorbike to round up 260 dairy cows for the morning milking. Staff arrive at 5am to assist and, on a good day, Neil’s back at home eating breakfast and enjoying his second coffee at 8am. Read more
The Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) Southern Region Barista Guild will host a screening of The Coffee Man on 14 June, starring Ona Coffee’s Sasa Sestic.
From 5pm the coffee community is invited to attend The Craft and Co on Smith Street in Collingwood, Victoria and participate in a cupping of Ona Coffees sampled from regions featured in the film, including Honduras, Colombia and Ethiopia. The screening of The Coffee Man will follow the cupping. Read more
