Harry Ko of Dukes Coffee Roasters wins Collingwood Cold Brew Throwdown

Proud Mary Coffee Roasters hosted its second Collingwood Cold Brew Throwdown on 27 October, and crowned a new Cold Brew Champ.

Harry Hyunsuk Ko of Dukes Coffee Roasters won the title, followed by Luke Free in second place, and last year’s inaugural winner Kiril Shaginov of Mörk Chocolate in third place.

Harry now adds the Cold Brew win to his growing repertoire of coffee titles, which includes 2015 and 2016 ASCA Australian Cup Tasters Champion.

From 6pm – 9pm Proud Mary invited brewers, baristas, roasters and coffee hobbyists alike to compete for the title and cash-prizes.

“Our goal was to bring people together over good coffee, provide a space were industry folks can be innovative, have fun, listen to tunes, and drink some tasty cold brews,” says Proud Mary Training Manager Lisa Feeley.

The format saw competitors go head to head to present their best and quirkiest cold brew recipes. Participants brewed a minimum 2 litres of cold brew, which could be prepared prior to the competition.

During the event participants could add additional ingredients (no alcohol) and present a 90-millilitre cold brew drink to each of the two judges, Anne Cooper of Equilibrium Master Roasters and Brodie Meah of Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. The judges assessed each drink based on flavour, balance of sweetness, acidity and presentation.

A people’s choice award was also awarded to a worthy cold brew recipe. This year’s winner was Caitlyn Colless of Proud Mary.

“Proud Mary Coffee Roasters would like to thank the competitors, the judges and all who hung out at this years Collingwood Cold Brew Throw Down – it was a banger,” says Lisa.
