Knowledge Talks to tackle sustainability in March

Want to hear how sustainability can be applied across the coffee value chain and into your business?

If so, it’s time to book your tickets to Toby’s Estate’s Knowledge Talks session in March, featuring SCA’s Chief Sustainability Officer Kim Elena Ionescu.

Kim will lead a discussion of best practices and opportunities for getting involved in making coffee better globally, to audiences in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

“I’m so looking forward to coming to Australia. From a coffee perspective it feels like Australia has been able to leap over some of the common practices in the US such as six-inch cappuccinos, and evolved more quickly in terms of your specialty coffee scene, which is intriguing for a lot of Americans,” Kim says. “I can’t wait to see your coffee culture in practice.”

In her presentation, titled “Sustainability, Risk, and Regeneration: How Can We Make Coffee Better?” Kim will speak about her work and why innovation and sustainability are inextricable at every stage of the value chain, and well as look at how Australia fits into the global picture of sustainability.

“The more we can work together the better. There’s an opportunity to pursue sustainability at all stages and levels, but it’s important to recognise that most of the threats right now to the future of coffee are being felt most acutely by the producers,” Kim says. “I want to reach people where they are and teach them about sustainability in the context of their businesses, but at the same time look at how we can draw parallels at farm level and address concerns on a more macro level.”

Through her work with SCA, Kim develops strategy and leads action to address the biggest challenges facing our industry. Prior to joining the association, Kim spent a decade buying coffee and creating and directing sustainability strategy for Counter Culture Coffee in North Carolina.
