Merlo Coffee to roast in Melbourne

Queensland’s Merlo Coffee is set to open its flagship roastery and coffee shop in Melbourne.

The Italian-inspired Torrezfazione will open at Melbourne’s iconic Queen Victoria Market from 10 February. Roasting is already underway.

The Melbourne site follows Merlo’s openings in Victoria Point and Indooroopilly, Queensland last year, and a full refurbishment of its Springfield Merlo Torrefazione.

Merlo Founder Dean Merlo says the company’s expansion is all part of planned growth strategy.

“This is a major line-in-the-sand for Merlo. While we have a family of wonderful wholesalers in Melbourne, to this point we haven’t roasted in the southern capital,” Dean said. “After years of planning, our long-term vision is now a reality.”

Dean says the company had been wanting to roast in Melbourne for the past few years, but had struggled to find the right location. With the Queen Victoria Markets on the edge of Melbourne’s CBD, Dean says “the wait was certainly worth it”.

Merlo Coffee was established in 1991 in Brisbane. Today Merlo owns and operates 14 of its own stores, with the Queen Victoria Market Torrefazione bringing the tally to 15.

The Queen Victoria Market Torrefazione will roast and sell coffee and fresh beans seven days a week. Coffee lovers can choose from a range of Blends, Single Origins, Limited Edition Beans or Merlo’s famous Bean of the Month.
