The Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) has announced winners for the 2023 Product Innovation Awards, in the categories of Coffee Accessories, Coffee Preparation Equipment, Ancillary Electrical Equipment, and People’s Choice.

The Trimatt ColourStar AQ V by Trimatt Systems was awarded the Product Innovation Award for Coffee Accessories. The Trimatt ColourStar AQ V is a digital colour printer for sustainable paper and cardboard packaging.

“Winning this award and being recognised by the industry is sensational,” says Trimatt CEO Matt Johnson. “I think we won it because people recognise innovation, and they can identify with a local manufacturer of equipment. As an engineering business, we identify opportunities, we put effort into it, we spend research and development dollars, and we test our equipment thoroughly. It’s a big effort from the team, but it’s clearly paying off.”

Franke Coffee Systems’ Mytico line won the award for Coffee Preparation Equipment. The Mytico Due and Mytico Vario machines are the first two models within the Mytico line and include a large variability of beverage options on two eight-inch touchscreens.

“For us [this award] means all the hard work we’ve put into the development has paid off,” says Franke Coffee Systems Business Development Director Oceania David Downing. “We brought a system to the market that will support the coffee industry and help simplify the barista’s job. It’s never been easier to offer a consistent, high-quality coffee with the Mytico line now available in Australia.”

The Rhino Spinjet Spray Assembly and Actuator Starb3-EDP by Bombora Supplies won the Ancillary Electrical Equipment award. Rhino Coffee Gear has reimagined the Spinjet valve system to meet the changing needs of the industry. With an all-new extended stainless-steel body, coupled with CNC-milled Delrin, and robust seal components, the RH3PE valve provides customers with the ability to use the valve in hot water applications.

“I’m part of a broader team that helped develop the product, so to have won this award is a wonderful achievement for us,” says Cameron McDonald, Sales and Technical Manager at Bombora Coffee and Water Supplies. “It represents what a small family business in Newcastle, New South Wales can achieve when they partner with the right people.”

The Good Cup by Roastar Coffee Packaging won the People’s Choice award. The Good Cup is a one piece, compostable, sustainably sourced paper cup with an integrated lid, available in a range of sizes and ideal for hot or cold drinks.

“Within the coffee industry, cups haven’t been shown in a great light, with approximately 2.7 million cups a day potentially going to landfill,” says Clive Jacobs, General Manager of Roastar Coffee Packaging. “The Good Cup will help in saving those 2.7 million cups from going to waste with its integrated lid and home compostable material. It’s one of the most sustainable single use cups on the market.”
