Research has revealed new insights into Australian coffee drinking habits, with younger demographics trading late nights for coffee-fuelled early mornings.

The McCrindle research commissioned by Nespresso found 76 per cent of Gen Z and Millennials plan to wake up earlier in 2025 to reclaim ‘me-time’ as compared with 48 per cent of Gen X, and 31 per cent of Baby Boomer respondents.

The number one way Aussies choose to spend their ‘me-time’ in the morning is by enjoying a cup of coffee (54.5 per cent).

The findings also suggest Gen Z prefer iced drinks with 41 per cent of respondents now preferring iced coffee to hot – a significant shift from 21 per cent of Millennials, 9 per cent of Gen X, and 6 per cent of Baby Boomers, showing Aussie coffee tastes are changing.

Additionally, more than 11 million (65 per cent) of Australian coffee drinkers are becoming their own baristas and making coffee at home to save money. Gen Z is also the generation most likely to make their coffee at home to save money (85.6 per cent), but still prioritise quality with 57.5 percent of Gen Z coffee drinkers identifying as coffee snobs. Meanwhile, 82 per cent of Millennial coffee drinkers are becoming their own baristas to save money.

Research has also found that 68 per cent of Australians refuse to pay more than $6 for an iced latte.
