Australia’s Shin Fukayama of Sensory Lab to compete in New York Coffee Masters

Australia’s Shinsaku 'Shin' Fukayama of Sensory Lab in Melbourne will compete in New York Coffee Masters.

Shin beat scores of applicants for the chance to compete in this year’s event, and return the crown to Australia after former colleague Ben Morrow won the competition in 2015.

Coffee Masters will return to The New York Coffee Festival from 13 – 15 October at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York, United States.

Coffee Masters is a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary global barista tournament designed by Allegra Events and creative duo DunneFrankowski.

Coffee Masters NYC will see16 baristas from across the globe go head to head in a series of battles to test their skills in six different challenges, emulating the busy working environment of a professional barista. The knockout format of Coffee Masters sees baristas demonstrate their skills in Cupping, Brewing, Latte Art, The Order Challenge, The Signature Drink and, in the event they make it through to the semi-finals, The Espresso Blend round.

The winner of NY Coffee Master will receive a $5000 cheque.

The other baristas competiting for the ultimate title of NY coffee master includes:

Agnieszka Rojewska of Poland, Varvara Stukalo of Russia, Anson Goodge and Jimmy Dimitrov of England, Janis Podins of Denmark, Rie Hanao of Sweden, and Rob Clarijs of The Netherlands.

Omar Maagaard Hossain, Christos Andrews, Dylan Siemens, Erika Lee Vonie, Justin Lacher, Mason Salisbury, Pip Zebrowan, and Reef Bessette will all represent the US.

The New York Coffee Festival is New York’s flagship coffee event, celebrating the city’s burgeoning specialty coffee scene. Now in its third year, the festival will feature live experiences from more than 70 coffee, food and equipment suppliers.

Visitors will enjoy endless free coffee tastings, interactive workshops, demonstrations from world-class baristas, delicious street food, intoxicating coffee cocktails, live music, art, and much more.

Latte Art Live will feature some of the world's best latte artists, and provide hands-on learning for the audience, participate in smackdowns, and showcase the skill needed to create beautiful latte art.

The Lab is returning and promises to educate, engage and entertain. With two stages for 2017, this interactive learning space will feature some of the top industry leaders and influencers. Stop by to listen to captivating talks, witness the latest in brewing technologies and stay updated on current industry trends.

This year the New York Coffee Festival will host an array of vendors including Australian ties Toby’s Estate and Bluestone Lane, and many more such as Stumptown, Joe Coffee, Nobletree Coffee, Variety Coffee Roasters, Devoción, Café Grumpy, Birch Coffee, Irving Farm Coffee Roasters, Starbucks Reserve, and more.

Exhibitors representing tea brands, coffee roasters, accessories and equipment brands will also be on display, including Sanremo and La Marzocco.

Ticket proceeds will go to charity partner Project Waterfall.
