Goglio and Jet Technologies tackle a growing industry

From the December 2017 issue.

Over the past 30 years, 95 per cent of Goglio’s packaging machinery has been deployed to the coffee roasting industry.

To cater to this demand, Goglio representative Federico De Paoli of its Machinery Division visited Australia to get a first-hand look at industry packaging needs and connect with key customers across the Australian east coast.

“I really wanted a deeper understanding about the Australian market, its intricacies, and to continue to grow the relationship with our local partner, Jet Technologies,” Federico says.

Federico moved from Italy to the United States to complete his masters in mechanical engineering. He is now based back in Italy and is the Project Manager for Goglio across the Asia Pacific, Northern Europe and South America. He is also responsible for managing the spike in coffee growth in Brazil.

Despite having operations in different countries, Federico says it's been interesting meeting global roasting players in Australia, with each company varing in its production facilities.

“For example in Brazil, consumption is quite different. To the consumer, a pre-ground vacuum pack means a higher quality bean. Coffee consumption occurs mainly at home and it is an overall faster experience,” he says. “In Australia, [consumers] treat coffee more like my home country Italy, where coffee is a social event occurring more often in restaurants and cafés. This affects the way the coffee bean needs to be processed and packed.”

Federico says packing whole bean coffee with soft flexible packaging is a popular method in Australia because it reduces the oxidisation process straight after roasting and sits nicely on the shelves.

“These social complexities change how coffee needs to be packed, displayed and delivered from the coffee roaster to the customer,” Federico says. “Jet Technologies, acting as our local partner, gives us a hands-on approach and local expertise to ensure that we educate the market on best practice in handling your roasting and packaging operations.

“[We] always sit face to face with every roaster to better understand their operations, and customise every machine we make to the needs of that specific implementation.”

Goglio and  Jet Technologies will continue work with roasters across Australia and New Zealand to maximise the quality of the bean through the packaging process.

Federico plans to visit Australia multiple times per year to better support the various Goglio machinery implementations.

“Goglio is seen as the leader in coffee packaging. You can find our machines in some of the largest coffee roasters across Australia and New Zealand,” he says.
