Jennifer Argyle of Blackbox Coffee Roasters wins Australian AeroPress Championship

Jennifer Argyle of Blackbox Coffee Roasters in Subiaco, Western Australia has won the 2017 Australian AeroPress Championship.

Australia’s best AeroPress brewers gathered at Single O’s Botany Roastworks site on 9 September for the national event.

Jeonggi Lee of Normcore Coffee Roasters in Sydney, New South Wales, placed second and Fraser Singleton of Camp Albion in Albion, Queensland, placed third.

Jennifer’s coffee was picked unanimously by the judges in her semi-final. She had strong competition from Fraser and wild card entrant Jeonggi, but out-pressed all competitors to win her place in the final round, and take home home the gold AeroPress trophy.

She wins return flights to Seoul, South Korea to compete in the World AeroPress Championship, and a new La Marzocco Linea Mini.

Jeonggi wins a Mazzer Lux D and a Bonavita gooseneck kettle, and Fraser wins a La Marzocco home barista accessories kit and Bonavita gooseneck kettle.

The competitors used a Muwa Estate Kenyan coffee with flavours of jasmine, blackberry, plum, lime, toffee and brown sugar.

Meanwhile, guests enjoyed the Aussie Nasties festival theme with once-off menus from Rising Sun Workshop and Cow and the Moon.

Jennifer’s winning recipe includes:

  1. 85°C water
  2. 20grams grounds (medium – coarse porlex hand grinder)
  3. Invert Aeropress
  4. 40grams water first
  5. Add coffee + start clock
  6. Add 130grams water in 30 seconds
  7. Bring surface to brim
  8. Attach filter
  9. Begin press at 60 seconds
  10. End at 120 seconds
  11. Add 50grams water
  12. Enjoy!
