Phillip Jones of Hains and Co proves bartenders make better coffee cocktails
The answer as to who produces better coffee cocktails has been answered.
Five of Adelaide’s best bartenders challenged five talented baristas in the ultimate coffee cocktail smackdown at Bank Street Social in Adelaide.
Despite a tight contest, the bartenders came out on top, with Phillip Jones of Hains and Co winning out the competition.
Phillip’s drinks were praised for their inventive flavour profile as well as his ability to tap into Italy’s historical hospitality culture to create the winning cocktails.
One of his original cocktails will be featured on the cocktail menu at Bank Street Social throughout the Adelaide Fringe festival for festivalgoers to enjoy.
Mr Black Spirits Co and Milklab hosted the event, which brought together two sides of an industry that are often kept so separate – the AM and the PM.
“Adelaide really put on a show for this event,” said Milklab Brand Manager Angelo De Blasio of Freedom Foods Group. “The level of competition was fantastic and we were blown away by the support shown from both the baristas and bartenders that showed up to support the event.”
Not only did the bartenders put on a great display, but many of the baristas showed just how versatile coffee can be when adapted to the cocktail world.
Izzy Willis from Local Grind in Walkerville demonstrated extensive knowledge on single origin coffees and the flavour components that results from cold brew. As a result, Izzy was awarded the highest score of the competing baristas.
A special mention goes to Chad Hanson of Electra House Hotel and Owen Colin of La Vigne for some inventive cocktails, including the use of liquid nitrogen.
The Bartenders vs Baristas competition will now be taken on the road. Keep a lookout for the competition dates and details in your nearest major city.
