Support CaféSmart today

From the August 2017 issue.

Today is the day to participate in CaféSmart 2017.

On 4 August, CaféSmart participating cafés are donating $1 from every coffee sold to support local homeless projects in their local suburbs or town.

Coffee roasters are supporting the cause through the donation of beans to wholesale customers, while anyone can contribute by making an online donation during August.

More than 700 cafés and close to 50 coffee roasters have registered.

"We are determined that this will be our biggest single day of fundraising yet,” says Adam Robinson, StreetSmart CEO and CafeSmart Organiser Adam Robinson.

“CaféSmart is one day of the year that’s just for the coffee industry – cafés, roasters and consumers – meaning they have ownership over this national campaign. StreetSmart came up with it, but the Australian coffee industry is the one driving it."

Joining long term supporters such as Campos, Five Senses, and Single O are many new roasters includes Tim Adams Specialty Coffee, Clark Street Roasters, Small Batch, Industry Beans, Double Roasters and Padre.

Skip has joined the cause as the Principal Sponsor. La Marzocco, Ordermate and Broadsheet have returned as Supporting Partners.

CaféSmart 2016 raised $160,523, breaking its 2015 total of $135,612, and hopes to continue the trend this year. One hundred per cent of these funds were distributed to 118 community grants that support people who are homeless or at risk.

All funds raised from the campaign are distributed to a grassroots homeless project in local areas.

CaféSmart is an initiative of StreetSmart Australia, which is based on a UK organisation founded by two ethically minded Londoners in 1998.

Adam set up StreetSmart Australia to break down the prejudices about homelessness and raise money for small Australian organisations.

"We won’t solve homelessness in one day, but we can all help be part of the solution,” Adam says. "Homelessness is complex, and it only takes a small change in personal circumstances for someone to be homeless."
