Nexus One wins Good Design Awards for product and engineering design

Aremde’s Nexus One espresso machine has won two categories in Australia’s Good Design Awards, in a ceremony held at The Star in New South Wales on 11 July.

The Queensland-based manufacturer’s Nexus One received accolades in the Engineering Design and Product Design categories.

The annual Good Design Awards is Australia’s international accolade for design and innovation with a history dating back to 1958. The awards celebrate the best new products and services on the Australian market, excellence in architectural, engineering, fashion, digital, and communication design, and reward emerging areas of design strategy, social impact, and design entrepreneurship.

The Good Design Awards jury spent several days evaluating each entry according to a strict set of design criteria, which covers good design, innovation, and impact. Good Design Australia CEO Dr Brandon Gien says recognised projects must demonstrate excellence in all areas and convince the Jury they are worthy of recognition.

“Receiving a Good Design Award at this level is a significant achievement given the very high calibre of entries received this year,” Brandon says.

“Australia’s Good Design Award is more than a symbol of design excellence, it represents the hard work and dedication towards an innovative outcome that will ultimately improve our quality of life. These projects showcase the brilliance of design and the potential it has to improve our world.”

The Good Design Awards jury praised Nexus One as “a machine that is bound to be a conversation starter. Functionally and aesthetically meeting the objectives of good design, this is set to be the product that cafés and bars are looking for”.

“Innovative design means less material usage during the manufacturing processes,” the jury comments.

“Movement from consumption to experience with the “barista window” is a pioneering aesthetic that sets this product aside from anything else on the market. A bold design move in what is otherwise a conservative market with little disruption to date.”

The Good Design Awards attracted a record number of submissions with close to 700 design projects evaluated in this year’s international design awards.
