Ona Coffee has announced its New South Wales flagship, Ona Coffee Marrickville, will host the first Australian Comandante Championship in late May.
The Comandante Championship is a filter brewing competition spearheaded by the coffee grinder producing company Comandante. In the competition, brewers must use Comandante hand grinders to advance through a series of rounds using various brewing devices.
Ona Coffee Marrickville Head Barista and Manager Isaac Kim expects the event to be a great success.
“The Comandante Championships have been really popular with baristas and brewers in countries all across the world,” Isaac says.
“We’re really excited to be hosting the first Australian Championship. We expect it to be a great night, with the coffee community and our customers all getting involved.”

The championship will be held at the Marrickville premises, which opened in 2018. Comandante’s official Australian distributor Bombora Coffee & Water Supplies will co-host the event.
For those interested in entering the championship, registration will open in the coming weeks with around 30 spots to be filled.
“We are looking forward to having a wide range of people compete in the Championship,” Isaac says.
“The night isn’t just about professional baristas and brewers. There are a lot of home brewers and coffee enthusiasts out there and we’d love to see them behind the brew bar.”
