Coffee Masters – New York applications close 31 August

If you think you have what it takes to become a Coffee Master, then apply for the 2018 edition of Coffee Masters – New York. The competition will return to The New York Coffee Festival from 12 – 14 October at the Metropolitan Pavilion. For the chance to compete and represent your country on the world stage, interested participants must apply to compete, create a coffee-based Signature Drink inspired by New York City and showcase it in a one-to-two-minute application video. Almond Breeze to find Sydney’s top Breezy Master 

Almond Breeze will host the Breezey Masters in Sydney to find New South Wales’ top latte artist on 7 August.  The latte art competition will take place at Haven Specialty Coffee in Surry Hills from 6pm to 8.30pm. The winner of this competition will go on to battle the best latte artists from across Australian the national Breezey Masters final, to be held in Melbourne in November.  The Breezey Masters is now in its third year. The event is a top class latte art competition that lets baristas showcase their skills using Almond Breeze almond milk.

MICE moves dates to February to accommodate Australian Coffee Championships

The Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) has announced it is changing dates from April to February to accommodate the 2019 Australian Coffee Championships. After MICE confirmed its relocation to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) and April dates in May, a week later World Coffee Events (WCE) established the 2019 World Barista Championship (WBC) and World Brewers Cup (WBrC) would take place mid-April 2019, leaving little time for an Australian competitor to prepare for the world competitions in Boston.  Due the unfortunate timing and MICE’s partnership with the Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) to host the Australian Coffee Championships each year within the trade expo, the official decision has been made to change the dates to 7 – 9 February, 2019.

NZSCA to host New Zealand Cup Tasters Championship on Friday

New Zealand’s best coffee cuppers will test their palates, speed and accuracy when they compete in the 2018 New Zealand Cup Tasters Championship on 27 July.  Commencing at 5.30pm at L’affare Melrose, the event has attracted the largest field of entries to date, with 33 competitors set to take to the stage, representing companies in Auckland, Hamilton, North Shore, Nelson, Waikato, New Plymouth, Wellington, and Christchurch.

Soul Origin to host National Barista Championship in Sydney

Sydney will host Soul Origin’s National Barista and Latte Art Championship in Martin Place on 27 July. This year, a total of 154 Soul Origin baristas across the country participating in the Barista and Latte Art Competition.   The coffee chain’s top 10 baristas and top eight latte artists will fly to Sydney to compete in the national finals.

André Eiermann’s Swiss success

André Eiermann has always had a fighting spirit. As a teenager, he faced fellow countryman Roger Federer in a tennis championship in their hometown of Basel. The contest was fierce, but Roger, showing his natural ability early on, won on that occasion. That same year, Roger was asked to join the Swiss Tennis Federation and moved from Basel to a training academy, while André went to study a Masters in Economics and Political Science at university.  After graduation, André had short stints working with large international marketing companies, but didn’t find the right fit. He was headhunted by a green bean company, and at age 26 went to work with Volcafe, one of the world’s largest coffee importers.

Matthew Lewin wins Fushan Barista Cup

Matthew Lewin of Ona Coffee has won the seventh Fushan Barista Cup in Hainan, China Matthew used a similar routine to the one he presented at the 2018 Australian Specialty Coffee Association National Barista Championship Final. He talked about the implications of freezing coffee and what it meant for specialty coffee in the future.
