Ethiopia Cup of Excellence auction breaks several records

The 2020 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence (COE) auction broke records, with total sales of US$1,348,690 (about $1,966,738) topping the previous record of US$830,245 from El Salvador in 2011. The El Salvador auction had 42 lots for sale, while the COE Ethiopia auction included only 28, achieving a record-high average price of US$28 per pound.

Niguse Gemeda Mude has won the first Cup of Excellence (COE) Ethiopia with his Sidama sun-dried natural coffee, which scored 91.04 in the competition. This was one of three coffees to score more than 90 points in the competition, each receiving the Presidential Award. Rumudamo Coffee Industry Trade scored 90.89 and RumuDamo scored 90.25 with 74110 varietal washed coffees, both from Sidamo.

Cup of Excellence Ethiopia to go ahead

International judging of Cup of Excellence (COE) Ethiopia 2020 has been relocated to Portland, United States, due to travel restrictions and lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic. The competition was scheduled to be held in Addis Ababa from 30 March 30 to 3 April and 7 to 10 April, in the presence of an international jury. The coffee lots of the top 150 pre-selection winners have been collected and stored in the Addis Ababa Cup of Excellence Center.

Grimanés Morales Lizana of La Lucuma farm in Cajamarca has won the 2019 Cup of Excellence (COE) Peru, achieving a cupping score of 92.28 for her washed coffee. The coffee is an unidentified mutation of the Bourbon varietal Lizana named Marshel after her father-in-law.

Cup of Excellence celebrates 20th anniversary

The Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) and its flagship program Cup of Excellence (COE) were honoured in a celebration recognising the 20th anniversary of the competition and auction program. The ACE says in this time, COE has discovered incredible coffees, micro regions no one knew existed, and brought international fame to individual farmers. While Brazil is the longest running program to date, COE has been established in multiple coffee producing countries. Bidders have paid up to US$300 per pound for winning coffees, resulting in a combined US$60 million going to farmers from COE auctions.
