Paul Kevin Doyle of Mikava farm placed first in the Cup of Excellence (COE) Colombia North, with a record-breaking high score of 92.71 for a natural processed Gesha from the Risaralda region. As well as topping last year’s record score of 91.35, Doyle’s Gesha is the first natural to take the top spot for Colombia.

Winning the coveted Cup of Excellence (COE) competition is like winning an Oscar at the Academy Awards. Just as the esteemed movie awards celebrate the best in cinematic production, each year the COE commends hundreds of farmers who submit their best coffees for assessment. The coffee with the highest score out of 100 is announced in front of hundreds at an awards ceremony, only without the red carpet arrival and golden statue. In this competition, becoming a champion is the reward.  Ismael Andrade knows this feeling well. On 30 October, his name and farm, Andrade Bros Estate Coffees, comprising Sao Silvestre and Capim Branco farms, was announced as winners of Brazil’s Naturals COE competition with a score of 93.26 for a lot from the Paraíso farm in the Capim Branco Terroir unit.

Cup of Excellence breaks several records in 2018

Several Cup of Excellence (COE) records were broken in the 12 CEO competitions held in 11 producing countries in 2018. The Costa Rican COE saw the winning lot from producer Luis Ricardo Calderon Madrigal receive the highest price ever paid for a COE coffee at US$300.09 (about $420) per pound. This was more than double the previous COE record for any country.

Minas Hill Coffee has confirmed that Cup of Excellence (COE) Brazil Natural 2018 winner, and long-time partner of the Brazilian coffee importer, Ismael Andrade will attend the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) 2019. Ismael’s COE winning coffee scored 93.26 at the internationally juried coffee competition. Another of his lots, using the Yellow Icatu varietal, won best coffee from the Cerrado Region of Brazil, a protected designation of origin.

Nueva Alianza wins Perú Cup of Excellence

Dwigth Aguilar Masias of Nueva Alianzafarm in the Cusco region has won the Perú Cup of Excellence (COE), scoring 91.08 for his washed Geisha coffee. Damián Espinoza García of La Palmafarm in Cajamarca placed second with his washed Yellow Caturra scoring 89.85. Franklin Chinguel Morales of El Romerillofarm in Cajamarca placed third with his washed Bourbon scoring 89.58.

Cumaral wins Colombia Cup of Excellence

On 20 September, the Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) concluded its 15thedition of the Cup of Excellence (COE) in Colombia with a historic result. Andres Londoño Montoya placed first, scoring 91.35 for a washed Gesha Bourbón blend from the farm Cumaral. This marks the first time a coffee from the Quindío region has won the competition.
