Renowned coffee producers Aida Batlle of El Salvador and Rachel Peterson of Panama are teaming up for a first of-its-kind collaborative tour to promote some of the most sought-after coffees in the world. Rachel and Aida will visit Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne for four events. Each will include a panel discussion, a question-and-answer session, coffee tastings and a meet and greet, where guests will be treated to cocktails featuring cascara from Aida and Rachel’s farms.

Emilio Lopez Diaz is a champion of El Salvador’s coffee industry. Through Topeca Coffee Roasters, he operates a vertically integrated company from production and milling to roasting and retailing. In 2000, Emilio Lopez Diaz had a decision to make. A recent graduate of an engineering management degree at the University of Portland, Emilio could follow his original plan to open a microbrewery in his home country of El Salvador, or, he could join the family coffee business.

Cup of Excellence El Salvador sees 25 coffees head to auction

J. Raul Rivera of Santa Rosa farm has won the 2019 El Salvador Cup of Excellence (COE), with a score of 90.57 for his honey processed Pacamara varietal. “At Finca Santa Rosa, we proudly represent [the] Alotepec mountain range and the variety which was developed locally, and the result of years of hard work are rewarded to farmers throughout the country,” J. Raul says. “COE has created a window of opportunity for producers of coffee. Through this event, the world of coffee is evolving for better. We need to promote COE if we want to change the industry.”

Cup of Excellence breaks several records in 2018

Several Cup of Excellence (COE) records were broken in the 12 CEO competitions held in 11 producing countries in 2018. The Costa Rican COE saw the winning lot from producer Luis Ricardo Calderon Madrigal receive the highest price ever paid for a COE coffee at US$300.09 (about $420) per pound. This was more than double the previous COE record for any country.

illycaffè and Lavazza release DNA sequence of Arabica coffee

An illycaffè and Lavazza-led partnership has released the first full genome sequence for Coffea arabica, which aims to prepare the coffee industry for climate change and improve the quality of coffee available. World Coffee Research has made the genome sequence publicly available here. The sequence is the result of the Coffea arabica Genome Sequencing Project. illycaffe and Lavazza conducted the study with Istituto di Genomica Applicata, IGA Technology Services, DNA Analytica, and the universities of Trieste, Udine, Padova, and Verona.
