Customers at Merlo owned cafés will be served takeaway coffee in BioPak single wall cups made from plants, rather than crude oil. Study finds people are born with taste for coffee

A Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) Berghofer study has found a person’s perception of bitterness, which is determined by their genes, could dictate if they prefer coffee or tea, and if they drink a lot or little. The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, analysed bitter taste perception genes using data from more than 400,000 participants. QIMR Berghofer collaborated with Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in the United States on the study.

Extraction Artisan Coffee in Logan City, Queensland, has become the first café in the world to install Aremde’s Nexus One coffee machine. Nexus One was designed in the Netherlands and built in Brisbane, under the direction of Aremde Coffee Engineer Geoff Michelmore. Nexus One removes the espresso machine’s wall of steel that traditionally separates the barista from the customer.

Danilo “Danny” de Andrade from DiBella Coffee has won the 2018 Australian World Tea Brewers Championship (WTBC), held at Fine Food Australia on 12 September. “I’m very excited to have won the World Tea Brewers Championship here in Australia, especially as this was the first time I entered,” Danny says. “The competition was tough and it was great to meet the other amazing competitors from around the country.”
