London calls for non-recyclable coffee cup ban

The London Assembly has called on the Mayor to lobby the British government to introduce a tax on single-use plastics and ban single-use, non-recyclable hot drinks cups. The London Assembly is a 25-member elected body that scrutinises the activities of the Mayor of London. The Assembly Member who proposed the motion, Léonie Cooper, says “with plastic polluting our rivers and oceans, causing terrible consequences for wildlife and our environment, we need urgent action”.

Sixty per cent of coffee species in danger of extinction

Scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in the United Kingdom have revealed that 60 per cent of all wild coffee species are under threat of extinction in two papers published in Science Advances and Global Change Biology. This includes the wild relative of Coffea arabica, the world’s most widely traded coffee, which has entered The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as an Endangered species, largely due to climate change projections.

Dan Fellows’ first attempt at the World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship (CIGS) in 2012 left him feeling as though he had something to prove. “[I] finished fourth after having issues with an AeroPress in the finals round,” Dan says. “As I did not feel I delivered my best possible performance that year, this has always left me with a feeling of having unfinished business with CIGS. Becoming World Champion very much feels like redemption.”
