Stepping out onto Sydney’s freshly manicured Allianz Stadium dressed in the Sydney Roosters’ iconic red, white and blue jersey is a memory few are lucky to share, but one Steve Wrightson recalls well. “It’s electric. Veneziano opened the Melbourne café to the public on 30 July. Cumaral wins Colombia Cup of Excellence

On 20 September, the Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) concluded its 15thedition of the Cup of Excellence (COE) in Colombia with a historic result. Andres Londoño Montoya placed first, scoring 91.35 for a washed Gesha Bourbón blend from the farm Cumaral. This marks the first time a coffee from the Quindío region has won the competition.

Brittany Gunther of Grinders Coffee named Coffee Masters – New York contender

The finalists for Coffee Masters – New York 2018 have been announced, including Australia’s Brittany Gunther of Grinders Coffee. Brittany will compete for the grand prize of US$5000 (approximately $6885) at The New York Coffee Festival, taking place from 12 – 14 October. Other finalists include Anthony Knauf of Black Sheep Coffee in New Zealand and numerous baristas from Europe as well as North and Central America.

WCR says genetic resistance to leaf rust could be gone within five years

World Coffee Research (WCR) has announced that fighting coffee leaf rust through genetic resistance won’t be enough to protect farmers from significant crop losses. Coffee leaf rust has wreaked havoc on coffee production, particularly in Latin America, since an epidemic hit in 2012.Some farms lost 50 to 80 per cent of their production, and the epidemic forced 1.7 million people out of work. The global coffee industry has since united to help farmers fight coffee leaf rust through the development of improved coffee varieties such as F1 hybrids, most of which are resistant to rust and other plant diseases.

Australian Latte Art Champion Shinsaku Fukayama offers top tips for aspiring baristas

With the Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) regional coffee championships about to get underway, 2018 ASCA Australian Latte Art Champion Shinsaku ‘Shin’ Fukayama has offered advice for this year’s competing baristas. “If you want to be a champion, practice every day,” Shin says. “I think consistency is the most important thing.” At a Lonely Planet latte art masterclass held at St Ali on 11 September, Shin demonstrated basic and advanced coffee patterns using Riverina Fresh milk and spoke to audience members about the key elements to becoming a talented latte artist.

United States withdraws from International Coffee Agreement

The International Coffee Organization (ICO) has announced that the Government of the United States is withdrawing from the International Coffee Agreement 2007, an international commodity agreement between coffee producing and consuming countries, whose objective is to strengthen the global coffee sector and promote its sustainable expansion.
