Toby’s Estate has released the date of its Swirl Club barista smackdown event, which will take place at its flagship store in Brisbane, Queensland, on 12 September.
The competition aims to showcase the skills of baristas and consists of four rounds in which 16 competitors collect points as they complete each activity. The top four baristas will progress to the final two rounds where the champion will be crowned, scooping a cash prize of $800.
The first round, Roll of the Dice, tests baristas’ latte art abilities using almond and oat milk. After rolling the dice to determine the latte art pattern, milk type, and vessel, participants will have a limited time to perform a latte art task for the judges to evaluate.
The second round, Tulip Stack, will test baristas on pouring the highest number of tulip stacks using one jug and one cup. Results will be assessed based on balance and accuracy. If any spillage occurs during the performance, the competitors will be eliminated from progressing onto the next round.
The third round, Froth Monster, requires the pouring of six piccolos, with each cup being scored on foam level. Baristas will be deducted points for every millimetre below or above an allocated line on the cup.
For the final latte art smackdown, two rounds will take place to determine the runner up and winner. Finalists will take part in a free pour challenge where the champion will be crowned based on execution and design.
The event is sponsored by Slayer Espresso and The Alternative Dairy Co., with each supplying materials and equipment.
