Sydney roaster White Horse Coffee has made its popular Soul of the South – National Park Blend, which honours the brand’s roots in the south of the city, a permanent member of its collection of specialty coffees.
The coffee is named in honour of the Royal National Park, coastal bushland close to the roastery that’s cherished by the White Horse Coffee team. Co-Founder Dominick Majdandzic says the blend was specifically crafted to capture the soul of the National Park, its natural beauty, presence, aromas, and feels.
“As a kid growing up in Sydney’s south, the Royal National Park was the backdrop of our childhood. We would see it, hear it and smell it every day as we went to school, soccer training, the beach, or the shops. If we were lucky, we’d ride our bikes through it or explore the winding bush tracks in the afternoon,” says Dominick.
“The Royal National Park was always there with its enriching and soulful presence. This seasonal blend is our ode to the Soul of the South, a place that continues to bring us much happiness.”
The seasonal blend was first launched as a limited-edition release in 2022, but it was so popular that the team have made it a permanent fixture. It features Honduras Montecillo, a washed coffee from the central west region known for its exceptional quality, and Alon Indonesia Gayo, a wet-hulled coffee from the Gayo Highlands of the Aceh Province. Its tasting notes include salt bush, cedar, and caramel.
“Soul of the South is known as an extremely versatile blend. Technically, it’s roasted closest to an espresso profile, but it’s been tried and tested as a filter as well and the results are amazing. It makes a great espresso and pairs particularly well with milk beverages,” says Dominick.
“As a special tip, it’s known to produce a very tasty affogato when paired with a simple vanilla ice cream. Think about salted caramel and coffee, the hot and cold fusion of the espresso and ice cream, and the sweetness of the vanilla – an absolute treat.”
