Jessica Galletly has won the second round of Restaurant & Catering Australia’s (R&CA) social media competition, Savour Summer, for her brunch snap taken at Pillar of Salt in Richmond on Valentine’s Day.

The Adelaide-based food journalist, who uses the Instagram handle @tasting_adelaide, is the second South Australian diner to win a $100 voucher courtesy of OpenTable for her image capturing the spirit of Sunday dining using #SavourSunday.

“It’s great that I was able to contribute to a competition that highlights how Australians love to dine,” said Jessica. “Through my work I see the power of social media, food envy is a great way of creating a conversation around the best places to eat.”

Jessica’s winning photo was taken on one of the biggest trading days for café and restaurant owners. Data released by OpenTable indicates 10.3 million Australians planned to dine out on Valentine’s Day, with Generation Y the most likely to dine out on this day.

Adam Nicolls, Owner and Operator of Richmond-based café Pillar of Salt, where the winning photo was snapped, said Sunday is proving to be one of their busiest trading days.

“People come out in droves on the weekend to grab a meal,” said Adam. “It’s great to see strong trade on these days.”

Although, R&CA CEO John Hart said this isn’t the case for all café and restaurant owners.

“Sadly, around a third of businesses choose to close on Sundays and public holidays due to the cost of operating on these days,” he says. “With increased Sunday dining comes the need to address the restrictive cost of labour that forces many businesses to close, reducing choice for consumers.”

Jessica, along with 560 other diners, remain in the running to win the major Savour Summer prize of a return trip for two to Tokyo courtesy of Singapore Airlines and a meal for two at Salt Tokyo by Luke Mangan. A judging panel will review all of the entries received via Instagram in early March to determine the winner.

The #SavourSunday competition closes on 28 February 2016 and is open for any photograph taken at an Australian restaurant or café on a Sunday this summer.
