Australian coffee trader Minas Hill has confirmed Brazilian coffee producer Pedro Gabarra will attend the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) this year.
Pedro is one of the first farmers to receive Carbon Positive status, meaning his Santo Antonio, Pinhal, Vertentes, and Mirante farms remove more CO2 from the atmosphere than they generate.
According to Minas Hill, Pedro is looking forward to discussing the coffee industry’s changing direction and is bringing some of his microlots to MICE. Some of his key goals at the show are to secure new sustainability partners and promote his specialty coffee.
Pedro will conduct a series of presentations at Minas Hill’s stand #346, focusing on coffee production during the pandemic as well as sustainability and its new challenges.
To solidify his commitment to the environment, Pedro has planted 100,000 trees in his farm in the last three years. Minas Hill, which has partnered with Pedro since 2013, is supporting Pedro in planting another 10,000 trees over the next 18 months.
The Wings Project furthers this commitment to the environment. According to Pedro, the region is the target of animal traffickers, who cruelly capture animals and smuggle them to other countries, resulting in the suffering and death of 90 per cent of animals captured.
The Wings project rehabilitates up to 250 birds every month, as well as mammals and reptiles. Environmental police apprehend these animals, and after being accessed by veterinarians, are sent to the Pinhal farm for recovery.
