Perth’s coffee and café scene has grown rapidly over the past few years, but being more than 2000 kilometres from any of Australia’s other capitals means it’s a city that’s often a victim of its own isolation.

Andy Tseng and June Li are looking to help Perth’s baristas grow in their own backyard though, and are preparing to open the doors to a new barista training facility in the city’s inner northwest.

Andune Coffee Studio in Wembley will open on 10 August 2025. The studio is not a traditional café, rather it’s a space for coffee enthusiasts of all skill levels to hone their craft and create better brews.

Andy is a three-time Western Region Latte Art champion, while business partner and fiancée June has stepped into the world of coffee with her marketing eye and brought their long-held idea to life.

“I think Perth, as a city, often misses out on a lot of the coffee community stuff that happens in Melbourne or Sydney,” says Andy. “If someone is doing a World Barista Champion tour, they’ll visit the east coast cities and Perth will miss out. Having this kind of resource will be so great for our community.”

“I’ve been in coffee for about 14 years now. I’ve been involved in cafés, roasteries, and coffee competitions for a while, and creating a space like this has been a long time coming.

“We would like to introduce more unique coffees to Perth, things like specialty, filter brewing, signature drinks. People only see these things in competitions, but they don’t get to try them in real life.”

After finding his own success in latte art competitions and competing on the national stage, Andy is placing more of his focus in training Perth’s baristas – whether that be established baristas looking to improve their skills, or at home specialists wanting to craft a better morning cup.

Now, Andune Coffee Studio is going to be Andy and June’s home base for inspiring Perth’s coffee community.

“I’ve competed since 2014 when I came second in my first competition in WA,” says Andy. “Now, I’m involved in the latte art judging scene.

“I always wanted a coffee brew bar in Perth because there’s not really anything like it here. While delivering coffee training classes for the past couple of years I’ve developed a way to make it a lot more fun for kids and adults.

“We started looking for a space to create this idea. We were thinking of making it a coffee shop at the start, but we decided to focus everything on training and build a space purely for barista training where we could run coffee workshops.”

Wembley, where the studio will be based, is just a stone’s throw away from Perth’s CBD and only a few kilometres from The University of Western Australia.

June says Andune has the option of putting on classes in English or Mandarin to open them up to as broad an audience as possible.

“Opening this studio, we want to welcome people of all levels who embrace coffee culture,” she says. “We want to establish a community connection. We don’t want people to come in, grab a coffee, and go. We want people to slow down, have a chat, and learn about coffee,” says June.

“There are a lot of international students coming to Perth, and a lot of Mandarin-speaking students have already enrolled in classes, and we have had a lot of great feedback there.

“The beauty of me not being a coffee person like Andy is that I understand what a broader audience would want, while he has the knowledge to also be able to help people who are already in the industry because of his experience.”
