The Newcastle-based business says it will be scaling back operations for family and health reasons. On 16 September, three companies connected to Sherwood Coffee’s cafés in Kotara and Charlestown Square entered voluntary liquidation.
What’s more, Sherwood Bakehouse, a bakery operated at the Kotara location that supplied baked goods to the other cafés, also went into voluntary liquidation.
In social media posts about the Charlestown Square and Gillieston Heights closures, the company said it was shutting down the locations to focus on its other cafés around Newcastle to ensure it was not “spread too thin with family and health in mind”.
According to the group’s website, owners Emily Gibson-Burns and Danny Sprague launched the first Sherwood Coffee café in 2017, before expanding to eight locations with 80 employees in 2023.
The company still has four remaining sites across Newcastle listed on its website.
