Southwestern Victoria’s Surf Coast Shire Council has announced the adoption of a new policy to further reduce single-use items and packaging.
Servicing costal townships such as Aireys Inlet, Anglesea, and Torquay, the council says its Single-Use Items and Packaging Policy aims to help protect the natural environment and reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill.
The new policy has been broadened to phase out many single-use items across council facilities, council events, and events on council land over the next three years. The policy includes a ban on all single-use coffee cups and lids, including those described as compostable or biodegradable.
Councillor Phoebe Crockett says the policy and implementation period would reduce the volume of waste being sent to landfill while being manageable for facility users.
“The endorsement of this policy is a sign that this Council is still committed to leading the way with actions that avoid waste and maximise re-use.”
