World Coffee Events (WCE) is holding a live webinar on 31 March at 2am AEDT to hear members of the World Coffee Championships (WCC) Competitions Strategic Committee explain rules and regulations updates for the 2023 World Barista Championship (WBC) and World Brewers Cup (WBrC).

There will be a chance to ask questions during the event, but WCC asks that viewers submit them in advance.

The Competition Strategic Committee is a volunteer leadership team designed to address competition needs and questions at the highest levels, interfacing with the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Board of Directors and other internal and external groups.

The WBC and WBrC committees will be focused on producing new rules for 2023, giving enough time to explore deeper changes. The full 2023 rules and regulations for both competitions will be available from WCE’s website.

Ahead of the webinar, WCE also announced scoring and evaluation changes to the 2023 WBC and WBrC. Video is available on the WCC YouTube channel.

SCA’s Curatorial Director, Jenn Rugolo, explained where these changes came from, what the SCA project on coffee value assessment is about, how it is relevant to the WCCs, what sensory testing best practices are, how they will be applied to the evolved cupping section of the value assessment, and how this will be integrated into the WCC scoring and evaluation practice in 2023.
