How Italian coffee roaster Lucaffè produces its coffee hasn’t changed much in 30 years according to Owner of Lucaffè Australia, Taryn Borello.

Slow roasting and small batches are key to how the brand achieves consistency and quality through its entire range. That range, however, is not limited to beans or ground coffee but includes easy-serving espresso (ESE) pods.

“The company still roasts its coffee in small batches using a slow drum-roasting process, which enhances flavour depth and caramelisation while reducing acidity. This old school method brings out chocolatey, nutty, and slightly fruity notes,” says Taryn.

“We source our beans from around South America, Asia, and Africa. The beans we use are known for their smooth, aromatic flavour with natural sweetness and mild acidity.

“Fans describe Lucaffè espressos as velvety, chocolatey, and slightly sweet with a hint of caramel. There’s minimal bitterness, making it great for drinking straight or with milk.”

Lucaffé’s pods are constructed to the standardised 44mm with seven grams of coffee, but the size of the pod is the only part which is “standard”.

“Our ESE pods are unique because at Lucaffè we perfect the grind size, coffee dose, and tamping pressure to ensure optimal water flow through the pod, rich crema, and strong and smooth espresso,” she says.

“It’s almost foolproof in achieving café quality espresso without needing a barista’s skill.”

Taryn also says the pods are more environmentally friendly than other competitors on the market.

“Lucaffè ESE pods are biodegradable paper, not plastic or aluminium – making them more sustainable than most capsule systems,” she says.

“Plus, they’re compatible with many manual and semi-automatic espresso machines.”
