La Marzocco announces new KB90 espresso machine

La Marzocco has unveiled its latest espresso machine, the KB90, ahead of its first tradeshow appearance at the 2019 Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) from 7 to 9 February.

The KB90 features a straight-in portafilter function which removes the need to twist the portafilter into place when the barista operates the machine. La Marzocco says this eases the motion of locking the portafilter into the grouphead, and significantly reduces the risk of wrist injury.

Named after La Marzocco Chairman of the Board Kent Bakke, the KB90 is inspired by the Linea PB model, presenting a familiar three-button user interface and auto-volumetrics.

“It’s always been a part of La Marzocco’s DNA to focus on the job of the barista. Twenty years ago, we started thinking that espresso machines should be operated with natural movements and motions to increase the enjoyment and speed of use for the barista. With the creation of the straight-in portafilter, I feel that we have built a machine that will forever improve the way the barista interacts with our machines,” Kent says.

In addition to the straight-in portafilter mechanism, other features include a group steam flush and drip prediction. The group steam flush automatically purges the group with water and steam, which increases cleanliness over the course of service and provides a better tasting espresso with no coffee residue.

The drip prediction technology stops espresso extraction at the correct moment to ensure target beverage mass without having the need to worry about off-set.

La Marzocco says the KB90 is designed to create an efficient work environment and make it easier for maintenance.

Aesthetically, the machine’s body echoes the curves of the Marzocco lion shield with a retro shape, while celebrating La Marzocco’s recent 90th anniversary with a festive red colour.

The KB90 has been added as a finalist for the MICE2019 Product Innovation Awards.
