Swap-and-go coffee cup scheme Green Caffeen has launched in the Australian Capital Territory in partnership with Ona Coffee.

Ona Coffee has introduced the reusable cup scheme at its flagship venues Highroad, Coffee House, The Cupping Room, and Typica.

Green Caffeen’s reusable cup scheme sees coffee drinkers download an app, sign up, then pick up a reusable cup from a participating café. They can then the cup to any Green Caffeen café, and if it’s within 30 days, it’s free to use.

By throwing support behind the program, Ona Coffee’s Angus Mackie hopes to help create a more sustainable future.

“A lot of our everyday lives involve convenient solutions that are putting pressure on the environment. Sustainable practices are crucial because we are talking about something that is long term,” Angus says.

“Green Caffeen is addressing an issue that almost all of us contribute to. They’re replacing single use cups with a solution that is still convenient but at the same time better for the environment. It’s very simple for the café and the drinker.”

Green Caffeen says it has already contributed 63,603 cups of coffee served through the Green Caffeen app, saving approximately 640 bins-worth from landfill.

“We’re building on Canberra’s existing [bring-your-own] coffee cup culture by presenting a more practical alternative. Everyone has those days when you forget your cup, yet still need your life-sustaining coffee to get through the day. This partnership is building on the strong foundations in place and making it easy – both for customers and cafes – to reduce the waste of takeaway coffee cups,” says Damien Clarke, Co-founder of Green Caffeen.

“Only eight per cent of takeaway coffee cups are recycled and around 2.7 million go to landfill in Australia each and every day… This partnership [with Ona Coffee] is building on the strong foundations in place and making it easy – both for customers and cafes – to reduce the waste of takeaway coffee cups.”
