Seven Miles Coffee Roasters has launched a new telemetry system across its café network, through its Perfect Pour program, to help baristas serve even better coffee.

The Seven Miles Perfect Pour uses cloud-based technology, through partner Flow Technologies, to provide live data on every cup so the local cafe can continuously monitor, and where needed, improve, its service to deliver consistently delicious coffee throughout the day.

“We’re delighted to be one of the first roasters to bring this brand new technology to our network of café partners, further enabling our ability to help deliver exceptional coffee in each and every cup,” says Seven Miles CEO Jenny Willits.

“By enhancing our 7M Perfect Pour program with telemetry, we’re now able to provide cafes with a whole new level of training and support, supporting our ultimate goal – to help our customers grow and thrive.”

The Seven Miles Perfect Pour program is a three part process:

  • The Flow device: A small, discreet internet connected device that provides data from the espresso machine.
  • Analytics dashboard: A web based dashboard that gives baristas objective feedback on their performance across the day and across the week.
  • Training & Support: This new data allows the Seven Miles training team to provide focussed coaching & technical support wherever they are.

This system compares every shot to the recipe, scoring it, before sharing that data so that each venue can review how every cup measures up. Whether it’s low shot to shot consistency due to crooked tamping, or low shot time accuracy due to stock rotation issues, this data is a brand new way to help baristas serve the best coffee possible.

“Telemetry has become commonplace with fully automated machines, but there is a gap here when it comes to cafes and restaurants,” says Dr. Adam Carr, Head of Coffee Science and Education Centre (CSEC) at Seven Miles.

“Over the last year, we’ve been working on ways for smaller cafes and restaurants to have access to better insights, control and technical support that technologies, such as this provides. By working with Flow & Barista Technology Australia, we’ve been able to put together a program that can make that a reality.

“It’s been a three month journey of testing the system in our Espresso Window and we have already seen 20 per cent more consistent results in hitting the ideal ‘recipe’ for coffees served throughout the day, since getting these insights.”

The Perfect Pour system will be installed in 12 Seven Miles cafés by the end of January 2021 with an ambition to have 200 cafés in the network using this system by the end of the year.
