The first teaser clip of The Coffee Man Chronicles will air at the 2019 World Barista Championship (WBC) on 13 April.

The Coffee Man Chronicles is a sequel to 2016 documentary The Coffee Man, which captured the journey of Sasa Sestic to the 2015 World Barista Championship.

“The first film began as a project to document coffee production and farms in Ethiopia,” Director Jeff Hann says.

“As we were filming, Sasa was competing in the Australia Barista Championship and asked us to come along. He won the national competition and we ended up travelling to the United States with him to continue filming at the World Championships.

“We had no idea he would win, and with all that amazing footage the film became a story about that journey.”

The Coffee Man Chronicles begins as the previous film ends, with Sasa winning the 2015 WBC.

“With the Chronicles, we really want to get back to that original idea of being origin- focused and sharing the story of the coffee journey, from the farm to cafes and these high end competitions,” Jeff says.

Current World Barista Champion Agnieszka Rojewska and sixth placed John Gordon will feature in the film.

He adds the new movie will include several characters from the original production, as well as an extended cast of coffee professionals from across the world.

“Of course we have Sasa, John [Gordon] and Hidenori [Izaki] who were all in the first film,” Jeff says.

“We also have more characters such as current World Barista Champion Agnieszka Rojewska and [United Arab Emirates] Brewers Cup Champion Ibraham Al Mallouhi.

“It’s a really great cast of people, with a lot of energy and passion for coffee.”

This second instalment of the Coffee Man story takes place across several countries, with footage and interviews from barista and brewers championships in Dublin, Seoul, Amsterdam, and Brazil.

“It’s still largely Sasa’s story, through his eyes”, Jeff says.

“It’s partly his experience working as a coach and working with new competitors across coffee competitions, and partly his quest for the perfect cup of coffee.”

The first teaser clip of The Coffee Man Chronicles will be released exclusively via livestream and on stage at the semi-finals and finals announcements of the 2019 WBC on 13 and 14 April.
