Rumble Coffee Roasters has released its 2018 Transparency Report, detailing its efforts to address key threats to the sustainability and longevity of the coffee industry.

The report is part of Rumble’s Transparency Project model, which makes pricing data at the core of Rumble’s trade available to the public.

The Transparency Report showcases Rumble’s face-to-face relationships with producers and the supporting initiatives developed as part of the project. It also reveals that the average price Rumble paid for coffee in 2018, $9.82 per kilogram, was nearly three times the average C-market price of $3.37 per kilogram.

Rumble launched the Transparency Project in response to record low coffee prices, with the global C-market, or commodity, price well below the cost of production.

Head Roster/Green Buyer Matt Hampton says he also heard concern over claims to costly specialty coffees without accompanying information about what percentage of the price went to producers.

“To us, transparency means placing real value on the labour of those producing the world’s finest coffees. It also means publishing real data and sharing that with the supply chain,” Matt says.

“We’re acting on the knowledge that the decisions we make regarding trade impact producers’ families, communities, and countries, and the sustainability of the coffee industry more broadly.”

Matt owns and operates Rumble with Directors Joe Molloy and Stan Bicknell. He says Rumble and its small team are proud of its ability to actively affect change in an industry under threat.

“The way we see it, running Rumble allows us to provide for our families and live a happy and comfortable life. If we encountered a situation in which the people who grow the coffee we supply couldn’t do the same thing, something would be wrong,” Matt says.

“We won’t let the fact that we’ve still got a lot to learn stop us from taking steps towards a more sustainable industry. We hope others join us.”
